Shopping for dog collars
On a lighter note.. I went online shopping again last night. On eBay. Shocking, huh? I've been looking for a couple of collars for Theo and Cuda for a couple of months now, and I've had a specific design in mind. It turned out to be very difficult to find these collars, even though it's supposed to be a standard collar, but late last night I struck gold and they were even reasonably priced.
Theo has a gorgeous medium brown leather collar with studs, but unfortunately it's a bit to heavy at the buckle. This causes the collar to turn around all the time, and it's annoying. It's also a bit stiff, and a little too long. When we visited Kennel Venjan to meet Cuda for the first time, we borrowed a collar for Theo and it was just perfect. It was soft, light enough to stay in place, and cute! So I decided to buy a couple of these, but I couldn't find them anywhere - until tonight. And the very best ting was the price, because I paid £4.95 a piece - that's about 137,- NOK for two collars and shipping! Since it's faux leather I'm hoping it'll be a tad bit lighter than the one Theo's already got, and the bone charm is so cute! So I ended up with a brown collar for Theo, and a black one for Cuda - and seriously, if they can't use them it's no big loss.
Sometimes I'm glad I can use our dogs as an excuse to go shopping. I mean, expecting mail isn't less exciting when it's for the little ones - one's gotta love Mr. Postman. I also ordered a couple of round ID tags, but I'm afraid they might be a bit too big for these small dogs. I paid $4.50 for two tags included individual engraving, so I'm not expecting them to be of superior quality or anything. I thought they looked cool with a cartoonish paw print in front, and ID tags are always useful.

Dog Show: Orkdal Hundeklubb
Sunday was an eventful day as we drove to Orkanger to attend the very last dog show of the year. It's a little sad that we didn't get to attend more shows than we did, but we'll try to do better in 2011 - on December 10th Cuda will be old enough to start his own show career. This time I tried to get a good night's sleep before having to get up at 06:30 AM, but just as last time I didn't get many minutes of shuteye. Bah! At least I survived the day, and I had a good time.

We've been practicing a lot since our last show, and I could spot a lot of improvement in both Theo and Øyvind as a handler. I'm so proud of my boys! We still need more practice, but considering that this was our third time in the ring it's looking very promising. It's nice to see that our work with Theo has paid off, making him more confident and focused in the ring. As opposed to last time he didn't curl up at all, but held his tail high, walked nicely and looked both eager and happy - just the way it should be.
Theo finished with two red ribbons - 1st quality and 1st place, and this time he also got a purple ribbon which is actually an honorary prize! I'm very pleased with the results, his critiques and I'm already looking forward until next time when it's Cuda's time to shine.

Greenies® Lite™
It's Saturday, and I've been enjoying myself with a little online shopping. I enjoy online shopping, it's so easy and convenient! When we visited my sister last Christmas she gave Theo a green little dental chew, which he seemed to really enjoy. Back home we were excited to find them at our local pet store, so we kept buying them for Theo.
Since our local pet store has stopped selling these little treats, I decided to see if I could order them online instead. On Amazon.com I hit jackpot, and I ordered a canister holding 96 ct for $22.99 plus shipping - which would be about 134,- NOK with today's exchange rate. A real bargain! Unfortunately I didn't notice that they had two different kinds of the same treat, one being low on calories, so I ended up buying a canister of the new enhanced Lite™ instead of the regular one.
One of my biggest fears when it comes to animals is anesthetizing them. I hate it, and I'm always afraid of being told that "something happened" during the procedure. I feel so sorry for them when they're waking up, all groggy, nauseous, dizzy and cold. Dogs need to go to the veterinarian every once in a while to have plaque removed, but we're striving to keep their teeth as clean as possible for as long as we can. I refuse to have them anesthetized unless it's absolutely necessary. Greenies® are a nice little tool in the fight against plaque and dental problems. They're easy to digest, rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals - and best of all.. Theo absolutely loves them!

Hurtta Pro Winter Jacket
I just have to say that I'm completely against dressing up animals in clothing, unless it's a garment necessary for keeping the animal warm due to the lack of a proper coat. It upsets me to see people dress up their animals in all kind of crap, and I cannot for the life of me understand why. Now, Theo was wearing a knitted sweater last winter because his coat was still too thin to keep him warm, and we had a cold winter. He didn't wear it when he was going outside for a quick pee, only when going for a longer walk to avoid freezing up.
Yes. I co-own two Chihuahuas. No. We don't treat them as babies, dolls or stuffed animals. They are live animals, and just as much dogs as a Siberian Malamute or Great Dane. They have four legs which they love to use for playing, walking and running, and we would never dream of depriving them of that joy. Theo has now developed a very nice coat, even though it's not full yet. Even so we've decided to buy him a Hurtta Pro Winter Jacket for situations where a little extra protection against the wind, rain and cold is needed. It protects the major muscle groups and tender abdomen area, and it's wind- and waterproof at the same time. I think it's really important to remember that a little cold actually help their coat thicken.

I was talking to my mom the other day, and we were discussing these winter jackets from Hurtta Pro. She told me that she got one of these winter jackets with my sister's dog Dennis, and she kept telling me how fantastic it was. I had actually been planning to buy one ever since Theo was a pup, but I was told to wait until he was fully grown to avoid having to buy another one as he grew. They're not exactly cheap! Then today, while visiting the Chihuahua forum, I found an ad for a jacket like this. It was the right size, the color I wanted, still wrapped in plastic - and the girl selling it was asking 550,- NOK, which would be about $94 with today's exchange rate. I decided to jump on it since the store I was planning on ordering from were asking $111 plus shipping for the exact same garment.
I like it!

Dog Show: Norsk Miniatyrhund Klubb
Jesus, what a day. Let me just tell you that it all started late last night when I decided that I wasn't going to bed, but sit up all night instead. No, I haven't gone crazy. We had planned to attend a dog show in Verdal today, and knowing that I wouldn't be able to drag myself out of bed at 6:30 AM - after only four hours of sleep - I figured I'd better stay awake to be sure not to miss the show. And as said as done. We drove to Verdal, where we had to ask for directions twice to find the damned place, and finally arrived just five minutes before it was supposed to be our turn in the ring. God, I absolutely hate being late for scheduled things! Thankfully there had been some delays, so it turned out we weren't in any rush at all. The weather was really nice, even though it was a little cold in the shadows, but it was a very nice experience. We got to talk to some new people, meet several gorgeous dog and we even got to look at some puppies for sale.
Kunne hatt noe mer markert panne. Fint nosparti, korrekt bitt md store, fine tenner. Mørke øyne, tilstrekkelig størrelse. Velplasserte ører, bra hals. Behøver utvikles i kroppen. Noe lavt ansatt hale. Bra fremvinkler, noe knappe bak. Velbåren hale. Rør seg bra fram, men unde seg bak. Kunne hatt bedre fraspark bak. Lovende pels.

When time was 11:00 AM it was finally our turn - I actually started worrying that we had missed our spot - to enter the ring for the second time ever. I participated in the world of showing with my Chinchillas long time ago so I'm not completely green, but on the other hand showing a dog is something completely different. Theo is a young dog, and he's both curious and easy to distract. We have been training a lot lately and Øyvind has done a wonderful job with him so far. Even if he could have walked better and been a bit more focused in the ring, I think he did great and I was very proud of him as he won his class!
Unfortunately it was cold outside as already mentioned, and this - in combination with being a little insecure because of all the new sounds, smells and impressions - caused him to curl up a little bit. If he had stretched out his hind legs as he's supposed to it would have raised his tail a bit more, and he would have looked a lot better in front of the judge.
Theo was awarded two red ribbons, one for 'very good' quality and then one for 1st place. I have to admit that it would have been fun to be awarded a purple ribbon or even a pink one, but we're aiming for one of those next time. It's important to have goals! ![]()
